Review

Turnberry is synonymous with Scottish coastal luxury. When it first opened in 1906, the hotel was a grand destination in its own right and was even graced with its very own railway station. For over 120 years, it has welcomed guests to its dramatic position on the Ayrshire coast. Today, as the UK’s only Forbes Five-Star resort, Turnberry blends authentic Scottish hospitality with world-class facilities, ensuring every visit is unforgettable. Whether for a conference, incentive trip, or retreat, Turnberry provides an exceptional setting.

Perched on a hilltop, the resort commands sweeping views of the iconic Ailsa Craig island and its celebrated Ailsa golf course. A true links course, the Ailsa stretches across rugged dunes and looks out toward the waters of the Mull of Kintyre. Alongside it sits the equally impressive King Robert the Bruce course, offering a different but no less challenging test of play. Both are ranked among Golf Digest’s World’s 100 Greatest Golf Courses. Guests can also hone their skills at the modern Golf Academy or enjoy the nine-hole par-three course designed for all abilities.

Beyond golf, Turnberry offers a wealth of activities. Groups can take in the coastal scenery through guided walks, falconry experiences, archery, or horse rides along the beach. The Spa at Turnberry features restorative treatments alongside a spacious indoor pool area with a Jacuzzi and sauna, while the resort’s fully equipped gym provides an energising space for fitness, keeping wellness at the heart of the Turnberry experience.

The hotel’s event spaces are equally impressive. A series of elegant ballrooms and meeting rooms - many with sweeping views across the Firth of Clyde and the Isle of Arran - create an inspiring backdrop for events. The grand ballroom, featuring handmade crystal chandeliers and floor-to-ceiling windows, can accommodate up to 700 guests in theatre style or 660 for dinner.

Dining at Turnberry showcases the best of Scottish produce with flair and creativity. The signature 1906 restaurant offers superb fine dining, while The Grand Tea Lounge serves afternoon tea and crafted cocktails. The Duel in the Sun, located in the clubhouse, provides a relaxed dining option and can be reserved exclusively for private events. For something truly unique, the Chef’s Table - an intimate experience for up to 10 diners in the heart of the kitchen - delivers a bespoke culinary journey.

With its blend of historic charm, breathtaking scenery, and flawless service, Turnberry creates lasting memories for every guest. Whether hosting a business conference, wedding celebration, or a golf retreat, the resort delivers elegance, comfort, and distinction in equal measure.

History

For centuries, Turnberry and the Ayrshire coastline have held strategic importance and hosted legendary figures. The landscape, with views of Ailsa Craig and the Isle of Arran, includes the ruins of Turnberry Castle, believed to be the birthplace of King Robert the Bruce, and the iconic Turnberry Lighthouse, guiding sailors since 1873.

Turnberry Resort opened its golf courses in 1901, designed by Willie Fernie, followed by the Station Hotel in 1906, which was one of the first in the UK to feature en suite bathrooms. During both World Wars, the resort served as a base for the Royal Flying Corps and later as a hospital for the Royal Air Force. After post-war restoration, the courses were revived and Turnberry went on to host The Open Championship four times. Today, Turnberry Resort combines its rich heritage with modern luxury to offer a five-star experience unlike any other.
