Villas have been a stand out feature of Lake Como since the Roman era and Villa Pliniana enjoys a special place in the lake's history. The land on which the villa stands was purchased in 1573 by Count Giovanni Anguissola, Governor of Como, who built the villa around an intriguing intermittent spring on the shores of the lake. Between the 18th and 19th centuries the villa was the favourite residence of artists and prominent characters such as Joseph II of Austria, Napoleon, Stendhal, Lord Byron, Percy Shelley, Alessandro Volta, Franz Liszt, Gioachino Rossini, Ugo Foscolo and Antonio Fogazzaro. Fogazzaro found inspiration at the villa composing his famous novel "Malombra" here and Rossini composed his opera 'Tancredi' while staying at the venue.
