The predecessor of Savoy Palace, the Savoy Classic, was constructed in 1912 – some 500 years after the Portuguese first discovered the island. It quickly became a favorite among British aristocrats who sought the island's warm winters, subtropical gardens, and renowned Madeira wine. However, with the passage of time, other hotels sprung up around it, and the Savoy Classic eventually faded into history. In 2008, it was demolished with plans for a new, phoenix-like structure to take its place. However, the recession hit during the interim, delaying the project for 11 years until a change in ownership.

Finally, on July 1, 2019, the island awoke to behold the stunning sight of the Savoy Palace, shaped like an undulating wave, with its 16 floors reaching for the sky as it swung open its doors. The hotel was always intended to pay homage to Madeira's cultural heritage, combining modernity with nods to the island's past, and creating a sense of place that is both rooted in tradition and infused with 21st century elegance.
