History
Commissioned by the insurance company Assicurazioni Generali as an extension of its headquarters in Venice, Palazzo Cordusio, originally known as Palazzo Venezia, was constructed in the late 19th century in an eclectic style. Built entirely in stone and enriched with elegant relief decorations, it formed part of the wider redevelopment of Piazza Cordusio.
The building was designed by architect Luca Beltrami, a prominent Italian architect and architectural historian, known for his work on Piazza della Scala and the restoration of Castello Sforzesco in Milan.
The façade features a prominent high relief of the Lion of Saint Mark, reflecting the Venetian origins of Generali’s headquarters. It also includes a niche with a mosaic depicting Providence as an allegorical female figure holding pomegranate seeds, symbolising the prosperity and growth associated with insurance investment.
