History

Owned by various monarchs and noblewomen over the centuries, Leeds Castle has served as a retreat for relaxation and extravagant gatherings. By the late 17th century, however, Leeds Castle fell into disrepair, reflecting a period of neglect. It wasn't until the 1800s that the castle saw a resurgence, with partial rebuilding and extensive renovations. The pivotal transformation came under the ownership of Lady Baillie, who acquired the castle in her quest for a country retreat. Recognising its potential, Lady Baillie infused the castle with her distinctive style, vision, and financial resources, leading to significant modifications.

Throughout the 1930s, under Lady Baillie's stewardship, Leeds Castle entered a golden age of grand parties and lavish entertainment. The castle became a magnet for statesmen, European royalty, film stars, and high society, who gathered for extravagant events hosted by Lady Baillie. In 1974, foreseeing the importance of preserving Leeds Castle for future generations, Lady Baillie bequeathed the castle and its grounds to the Leeds Castle Foundation, a charitable organisation dedicated to safeguarding this historic landmark. Today, Leeds Castle stands as a testament to its rich heritage, welcoming visitors from around the world to experience its illustrious past and scenic surroundings in the heart of Kent.
